He came in like a handsome stranger and blew me off my feet.
I fell madly in love, like the naive girl I am.
Then he left me high and dry.
Turns out, I was nothing more than a business plan for billionaire playboy, Marcus Tandem.

I believed in what we had, until the truth reared its ugly head.
I never meant anything to Marcus. Not a damned thing.
With my world spinning on its axis, the girl I once was has long since died.
Instead he left me as this empty, emotionless shell.

Review
What is it they say? There's a fine line between love and hate. There is.
Bella Jewel has a real knack for giving us outstanding stories that draw you in and characters that you both love and hate at the same time. Once you open them, you don't stop, not until you've reached the very last page. This, for me, was one of those books. The synopsis had me intrigued, the prologue had me hooked and the story had me loving every single moment of it. It had humour, heartache, lies and deception, unrequited love and some brilliant lead characters.
This is the story of Marcus and Katia, who we saw glimpses of in Anguish (Mack's story) and who from these glimpses had me intrigued at the story of these two. From the offset it is clear at the kind of turn this book will take and we do get an understanding of the characters and the base plot line initially. It's the kind of plot that I love, unrequited love, hardheaded alpha males and a feisty female lead. I knew this story was going to be good right from the offset, but I never knew how much I would enjoy it. Your heart aches for Katia throughout the book who, for her, married for love and doesn't understand why her husband isn't like the rest. Why doesn't he show the same love and commitment that she so easily gives him? All marriages come with problems so surely this is just a rough patch? What will happen when Katia realises that she was all part of a plan to obtain his Grandfathers business?
I'm an asshole. She's a contract.
Marcus Tandem doesn't believe in love. The very thought of it disgusts him. He will never fall in love or settle down with anyone. But when his Grandfathers will states he needs to be married in order to gain the business, he needs to find a wife, and fast. Upon meeting Katia, he knows she is the perfect woman for this. He played her into his games and made her fall in love with him, and he knows that Katia loves him with everything in her. But this is something that he can't return. He is a bad man, and he is one that you love to hate. He is ruthless, heartless and manipulative to the point where you wonder if he can ever be redeemed.. but don't hold your breathe for that. How will Katia react when she finds out that she is living a lie? Can she ever forgive him?
"Marcus," I breathe. "You're destroying me. You're taking everything I am and twisting it. You're... ruining me."
I loved Katia as a character. For Marcus she had so much love to give and practically worshiped the ground he walked on. She didn't understand why he didn't act like her friends husband's, he'd always been the standoffish and broody type. After a while though, Marcus's plan begins to backfire as he slowly crushes Katia's hopes and dreams of a future and leaves her questioning herself and him. Is it something she's done? Are all men really like this? Katia's insecurities get the best of her and from this tries to input more and more into her marriage.. but something has to give eventually. Marcus surely does love her right? I mean, why else would her marry her other than for love? She was a truly great character to read about and my heart bled for her as she gave her love so freely and all you wanted was for her to get something in return. Can she be the one to break Marcus's tough exterior and show him that it is ok to give your heart to someone?
For a moment, just a moment, I let my guard down. I let myself open up and when I did, I felt fear. For her. For my wife. I felt a genuine fear something had happened to her. It's not an emotion I've experienced in my life, and it's nothing I want to experience again. I can't let her in. This isn't how it's meant to go.
This is the first book of their story and one that I cannot wait to see how it plays out. The ending was both shocking but expected.. hard to explain but it ended perfectly and gave a little glimpse of hope to the situation. But when your heart has been ripped out so badly, is there ever going to be a happy ending for these two? Those last few lines of the book have me eagerly anticipating the next. There was so much thought into the plot and characters in this book, and it really does show. For me, it was flawless and I loved every moment of it. Bella has the ability to ensure you feel every heartache, ounce of hope and every emotion throughout, keeping me completely hooked on the story.
Bella's books for me, just continue to get better and better. I can tell that these will be one of my favourite stories for her, just for the brilliance and the connection to the characters. I love the whole love, deception and lies plot and this falls perfectly into this category. It was perfect and now I NEED the sequel!!
